We've all been there. There's been a liquid lipstick that everyone is raving about. Your mum. Your friends. Your work colleges. The internet. EVERYONE. They're all talking about how brilliant the formula is, and how unique the colours are. How this liquid lipstick is far superior to every other lipstick they've ever used and that it's 'the best liquid lipstick ever'. Its described as a 'must have' item, 'a holy grail', and sometimes even a 'I can't live without' item.
Story of My Life
You decide that you have to have it. You jump online or rush into store to pick up your own piece of heaven. Or, if something a little more elusive you may have been required to wake up in the middle of the night and be at your computer ready for the product restock, giving your refresh button a solid workout. And after a much anticipated wait it finally arrives. This moment is almost as monumental, if not more, than the birth of your first born child. You unpack it. Swatch it. Apply it. Take a few dozen selfies to show off your need bestie. And then the worst thing ever happens. Flaking. Cracking. Bleeding. Smudging. Drying. Sinking. Poor longevity and easy transferring. Yuck.
What's a girl to do?
You've spent your hard earned cash on a product that other girls had been raving about. You thought you could trust what everyone else was saying. Why does everyone elses liquid lipstick look amazing on them and last from 9-5, but mine flakes within an hour of application? I don't have a scientific answer as to why flaking occurs for some people and not for others. However, in my personal experience I have found that liquid lipsticks with a thinner formula tend to have short lifespans once applied and often end up bleeding, flaking, cracking and being very drying on my lips. Some cosmetic companies have suggested that leaving your liquid lipstick in the fridge for approximately 30 minutes can thicken up the formula and assist with application and longevity but I don't think my boyfriend would be very impressed if I had a section in the fridge dedicated to my liquid lipsticks. Cosmetic enthusiasts suggest lathering your lips in a thick layer of lip balm prior to application, however most products recommend wearing no other lip products with their liquid lipsticks as it ruins the finish and longevity of the product.
So again were posed with this one question: what's a girl to do?
First Aid for Liquid Lipsticks
Through much experimentation and research, I've found a solution that I have had great success with. Yesterday we took a look at Lanolips lip care range, which I feel that I raved on about. If I didn't convince you to buy it yesterday, let me try again today. Since adding Lanolips to my liquid lipsticks they now last all day when applied and still have the integrity of a liquid lipstick! If you missed my Lanolips review you can check-it out here to find out why I love Lanolip and to get the 411 on what lanolin is.
Right now you're probably thinking, what is Lanolips going to do for my liquid lipstick?
Lanoips contains a substance known as lanolin, which has crazy hydration properties. By adding this to your liquid lipstick you'll improve hydration and the flexibility of the formula which means you'll be saying bye bye to all of those cracks, flakes and bleeding.
Using a stainless steel mixing palette I apply the tiniest amount of either my lemonade or banana lanolips, and then using my wand from my liquid lipstick add around the same amount of liquid lipstick as I would generally use to the palette. And then from there you just mix the two together and apply to your lips! Adding Lanolips to any liquid lipstick should still keep the integrity of the liquid lipstick in tact, which means: it will dry matte, transfer should not be affected, and the colour will remain the same.
NOTE: It should only take one very small squeeze of the tube to get the amount that you need. If your liquid lipstick is easily transferred throughout the day or doesn't dry matte then you've used too much product.
Not to sound over-dramatic, but Lanolips has saved my life and many of my liquid lipsticks from ending up in the bin! Lime Crime and Jeffree Star liquid lippies are not wearable and aren't a pain to maintain throughout the day. I can't wear these liquid lipsticks without adding a Lanolips balm to them!
Try as we may, not all liquid lipstick can be saved. Too Faced Melted Chocolate collection, I'm looking at you! Despite adding Lanolips, this particular lippie continued to bleed and wear really badly, with that white line on my lower lip showing up again!
All you can do it try beauties. If you have a liquid lipstick that hasn't been kind to you in the past, then add some Lanolips lip balm and see how you go! Best part is, Lanolips also include SPF and are an amazing moisturiser, so its a bit of a win-win in terms of adding another lip product to your collection.
Would love to hear your thoughts and if this works for you! All the best beauties.
